The Lake County Coroner’s Office Thursday identified three men who died in unrelated incidents in recent days. Paul Anderson of Lake Zurich died in a Dec. 23 auto accident. Anderson, 72, suffered a fatal medical event while driving at around 11:30 a.m. He crashed his car into several trees and another vehicle near Pheasant Ridge Drive and Old Mill Grove in Lake Zurich. Anderson’s passenger was injured in the crash, authorities said. Axel Maldonado, 22, of Round Lake Beach, was identified as the man who died when the car in which he was riding ran into a house at around 7:25 p.m. Tuesday near Lake Villa. The house was not occupied at the time. The driver has been charged with reckless homicide and DUI, police said. A man killed in a Dec. 22 shooting in Waukegan was identified as Christopher Tapia, 19, of Zion. Authorities said he was shot at around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of South Park Avenue and Water Street. The incident remains under investigation. Child porn charges A Waukegan man is due in court Monday for a detention hearing on child pornography charges, according to local police and court records. Jose Paz-Hernandez, 31, was arrested on Dec. 19 after police executed a search warrant at his residence in the 3000 block of Kathe Lane, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and the sheriff’s office received a tip that someone was uploading child pornography from the Kathe Lane address. After seizing electronic devices, authorities conducted examinations and discovered child sexual abuse images. Prosecutors filed 10 counts of child pornography against Paz-Hernandez, and also filed a petition to detain him until trial. The detention hearing is scheduled for Dec. 30. “With new technology and a dedicated team in our office, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and alongside all our law enforcement partners, we will locate and apprehend those who threaten the safety of our children and our community. Our prosecutors will hold them accountable in the courtroom,” Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said. “This arrest highlights the exceptional work of our detectives and the critical collaboration between the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “By combining our resources, including our sheriff’s electronics detection canine, K9 Tera(byte), we are unwavering in our commitment to identifying and apprehending individuals who exploit and harm children. We will always invest our resources on protecting the most vulnerable members of our community.” Reward The FBI is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the capture and conviction of the man who robbed a bank branch in Round Lake Beach in November. The robbery occurred on November 20 at around 5:35 p.m. at the US Bank branch inside the Meijer store at 750 East Rollins Road. Authorities say the man is about 5-foot-11 and wore dark, wire-rimmed glasses and a light-blue medical mask. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chicago field office of the FBI at (312) 421-6700. College Football Fans Are Giving Kirk Herbstreit A Hard Time On SaturdayBefore Christa McAuliffe was an astronaut, she was a vibrant teacher in New England keen on showing her students how everyday people left extraordinary marks on U.S. history. Nearly four decades later, a new documentary focuses on how she still inspires others and less on her fate aboard the space shuttle Challenger. “Christa: From Ordinary to Extraordinary” from New Hampshire PBS explores her close relationship with the state and its capital, Concord, where she was picked from more than 11,000 applicants to be the nation’s first teacher in space. “You say ‘Christa’ in New Hampshire, everyone knows exactly who you’re talking about,” Gov. Chris Sununu says in the film. Its release Dec. 19 came three months after a bronze statue of McAuliffe was unveiled at the Statehouse, on what would have been her 76th birthday. The documentary features interviews with community members, footage of scenes such as a Main Street parade for McAuliffe, and some of her comments — including her parting speech to Concord High School seniors in 1985. It reflects the pride and joy felt by residents then and now for an enthusiastic teacher who loved learning and telling stories. McAuliffe was 37 when she died, one of the seven crew members aboard the Challenger when the space shuttle broke apart on live TV on Jan. 28, 1986. The documentary briefly touches on the tragedy. “We all want to be remembered for who we were, what we cared about, what we loved, what we did, and not how we died,” Jeanne Gerulskis, the recently retired executive director of the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, says in the film. McAuliffe taught social studies at Concord High School beginning in 1983. She created a course on the history of American women that’s still taught there today. People in the documentary said she wanted students to see the role ordinary people, particularly women, can play in history. McAuliffe saw herself as one of them. A lover of field trips, she looked forward to bringing back her thoughts and journal from the shuttle mission “like a woman on the Conestoga wagon pioneering the West,” she said in an interview. Holly Merrow, a former student of McAuliffe’s in the women’s history class, feels the documentary embodies her spirit of wanting to inspire children. “We felt like we were going to space, as well,” Merrow, now a teacher in Maine, said about McAuliffe at a recent screening of the film. The documentary also talks about the importance of telling children who McAuliffe was. In New Hampshire, many children learn about government beginning in fourth grade. They visit the Statehouse. McAuliffe’s statue stands near the entrance, a good starting point for a discussion. It’s the first statue added to the grounds in more than a century, and the first woman. At Concord High School, Kimberly Bleier teaches social studies in a room where McAuliffe once taught. In the film, she says she often reminds herself that “there’s a lot of responsibility there” to ensure that what McAuliffe brought to the school, such as her love of hands-on learning, is still remembered and talked about. Bleier currently teaches Street Law, a general introduction to the legal system that emphasizes criminal and juvenile law. McAuliffe taught that class, too. Bleier was a sixth grader when she watched the shuttle launch on television. She recalled how devastating it was. “I don’t want to watch the shuttle blow up again,” she said. “I want to watch her. I want to hear her.”

I’ve seen this week, people are taking the lyrics of Kendrick Lamar’s and really holding space with that, and feeling power in that. But whether you’re into DJ MUSTAAAAARRRRRRRRD! or the soundtrack, you’re not going to get into it without good speakers. And that’s why you’ll be really into these home audio Black Friday deals at Amazon. I’ve personally tried many, maybe even most, of these picks on this page, and I particularly vouch for the featured four. But you should be really quick because these bangin’ deals won’t be defying gravity for long at these prices. Whether you’re just interested in two-channel or intend to build from discrete components, you want your front right and left channels to deliver a wide soundstage with excellent imaging. And that’s just what you’ll get from the Dymension tower speakers, which feature a unique bipolar array, meaning two 5.25-inch long-throw midrange drivers and a 1-inch aluminum oxide dome tweeter . And the reflections of those rear-focused channels mean there’s enveloping energy throughout the room. Anchoring that immersion is the integrated powered 10-inch subwoofer and two passive radiators within each speaker. That’s a lot of muscularity rounding out pure musicality. So, if you love low-end, you’ll want to grab them at their lowest price during Amazon’s Black Friday sale. Just remember you need to purchase two. And while the subwoofers are powered—just add a convenient outlet, the tweeters still need and (you can see some options if you scroll to the bottom of the page). Once you’re all set up, however, believe me when I say that no one is saying “woof” to these woofers. Want the option to build out but prefer to start with a single speaker that works in multiple dimensions (and in a multi-room scenario)? The Sonos Era 300 wowed us when we in 2023, and it continues to impress all these months later. The speaker decodes and natively plays back from streaming services like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and TIDAL wirelessly from a single source (albeit through the use of the Sonos app). This feature comes courtesy of a six-driver array positioned forward and upward to offer greater depth. Keep an Era 300 in different rooms to enjoy songs throughout your home. Or, for even better stereo and Dolby Atmos performance, add a second Era 300 and pair the two together. And, if you end up ready to buy and set up your home theater, you can take two Era 300s and make them your rear channels. The KEF LS50 Wireless II at $500 off is the future-fi deal you don’t want to ignore. When someone tells me they’re more interested in getting wrapped up in their playlists than cords, I say skip the components and grab a pair of KEF’s compact but compelling speakers (and you can always add a sub later if you crave more low-end). With wireless support up to 24-bit/96 kHz audio (and network file support up to 24-bit/384 kHz), the LS50 Wireless II give you access to unadulterated audio no matter your service or format(s) of choice. Stream music directly over Bluetooth, WiFi, AirPlay 2, and Google Chromecast (among others), or integrate digital and analog via wired connections, including HDMI eARC, Ethernet, coaxial and optical inputs, and 3.5mm aux-ins. Inside each speaker, custom amps deliver 280 watts of power to each woofer and 100 watts to each tweeter for big, clean, distortion-free sound at any volume. The LS50 Wireless II’s striking, copper-hued Uni-Q driver orients a 1-inch vented aluminum-dome tweeter in the acoustic center of a 51⁄4-inch magnesium-aluminum alloy woofer cone to create a wide listening sweet spot that’s detailed and dynamic. Available in multiple colorways, the LS50 Wireless II will brighten up your room and recordings. Introduced in July 2024, the JBL Stage 2 loudspeaker lineup offers elevated entry-level for aspiring hi-fi and enthusiasts. But affordable building blocks doesn’t mean boxy sound. Available in Latte (white) and Espresso (brown), the L280F speaker (the towers shown above) can anchor an Atmos setup or just offer powerful playback with nimble pacing, lively dynamics, and plentiful authority. A 1-inch anodized aluminum dome tweeter mounted in a next-generation HDI [High-Definition Imaging] Horn ensures a shockingly wide but still accurate soundstage, while two 8-inch drivers and rear-firing ports extend crowd-pleasing, hard-hitting bass down to 33Hz. And if you decide to add more Stage 2 components later, you can be sure they will be voice-matched for maximum clarity and minimum guesswork. If you want to start with spacious stereo and work your way to a more enveloping experience, the Stage 2 series offers far more than a soundbar can deliver (just remember to buy two). Of course, you still need optimized amplification, so JBL has also released complementary Modern Audio Receivers—including the , , and , depending on the channels and features you need (and all on sale). $899 (Was $1,699) $1,498 (Was $1,998) $248 (Was $398) $719 (Was $899) $648 (Was $849) $998 (Was $1,399) $1,998 (Was $2,499) – Pair $899 (Was $999) – Pair $399 (Was $969) – Pair $1,199 (Was $1,499) – Pair $84 (Was $119) – Pair $99 (Was $149) – Pair $125 (Was $179) – Pair $259 (Was $399) – Pair $269 (Was $369) – Pair $199 (Was $249) $234 (Was $599) $375 (Was $499) – Pair $349 (Was $599) – Pair $999 (Was $1,499) – Each $375 (Was $499) – Pair $299 (Was $399) – Each $299 (Was $599) – Each $455 (Was $649) – Each $595 (Was $849) – Each $769 (Was $1,099) – Pair $279 (Was $399) – Each $369 (Was $529) – Each $1,040 (Was $1,299) – Each $1,849 (Was $2,299) $178 (Was $249) $212 (Was $249) $199 (Was $229) $299 (Was $349) $239 (Was $299) $149 (Was $199) $419 (Was $549) $499 (Was $799) $248 (Was $349) $598 (Was $899) All models 20% off

Cake shop couple lash out at Chancellor's right-hand manSpecial counsel Jack Smith asked a federal judge on Monday to dismiss the case accusing President-elect Donald Trump of plotting to overturn the 2020 election, citing longstanding Justice Department policy shielding presidents from prosecution while in office. The move announced in court papers marks the end of the Justice Department’s landmark effort to hold Trump accountable for what prosecutors called a criminal conspiracy to cling to power in the run-up to his supporters’ attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Justice Department prosecutors, citing longstanding department guidance that a sitting president cannot be prosecuted, said the department’s position is that “the Constitution requires that this case be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated.” “That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind,” the prosecutors wrote in Monday’s court filing. The decision was expected after Smith’s team began assessing how to wind down both the 2020 election interference case and the separate classified documents case in the wake of Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Justice Department believes Trump can no longer be tried in accordance with longstanding policy that says sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted. Trump has cast both cases as politically motivated, and had vowed to fire Smith as soon as he takes office in January. The 2020 election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing the Republican as he vied to reclaim the White House. But it quickly stalled amid legal fighting over Trump’s sweeping claims of immunity from prosecution for acts he took while in the White House. The U.S. Supreme Court in July ruled for the first time that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, and sent the case back to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to determine which allegations in the indictment, if any, could proceed to trial. The case was just beginning to pick up steam again in the trial court in the weeks leading up this year’s election. Smith’s team in October filed a lengthy brief laying out new evidence they planned to use against him at trial, accusing him of using “resorting to crimes” in an increasingly desperate effort to overturn the will over voters after he lost to President Joe Biden. With more than half of the 16 teams still mathematically alive to make the conference championship game, the Big 12 will command a lot of attention in the final week of the regular season. No. 14 Arizona State and No. 17 Iowa State would play for the Big 12 title and likely College Football Playoff spot on Dec. 7 if they both win Saturday and there's a four-way tie for first place. There are seven other teams that begin this week with hopes, slim in most cases, of getting into the game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Last week it was No. 19 BYU and No. 23 Colorado that had the inside track to the championship game. Arizona State beat the Cougars and Kansas knocked off the Buffaloes, and here we are. "Everybody counted us out, I think, two weeks ago," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said after his team beat Utah 31-28. "We didn't flinch. We didn't waver. And we just keep fighting." The Cyclones were national darlings the first half of the season as they won seven straight games to match the best start in program history. Back-to-back losses to Texas Tech and Kansas followed. Now they've won two straight heading into "Farmageddon," their rivalry game against Kansas State at home. "Right now they've got the pen and they continue to write the story," Campbell said of his players, "and I hope they will continue to write it the way they've got the ability to write it. Unwavering. Tough, mentally tough, physically tough. This group has stood for it every step of the way." Arizona State has been an even better story than the Cyclones. The Sun Devils have six more wins than they did last season, when they went 3-9. They were picked to finish last in their first year in the Big 12. They'll go for their fifth straight victory when they play at Arizona on Saturday. "These guys came off no momentum and everybody doubting them, and everybody is still doubting them. That's what makes this special," second-year coach Kenny Dillingham said. "Hopefully the expectations become higher. I don't know if there's a way we can exceed expectations more than we're exceeding them right now." Checking in on five of the Top 25: The Ducks were idle Saturday after clinching a spot in the Big Ten championship game with their win at Wisconsin on Nov. 16. Oregon can go 12-0 in the regular season for the first time since 2010 if it beats Washington at home this week. Oregon's only two losses last season came against the Huskies, both decided by three points. The first was a top-10 matchup in the regular season and the second was a top-five matchup in the Pac-12 championship game. The Ducks are 19 1/2-point favorites this time, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. The Buckeyes' showdown with upstart Indiana combined with Michigan's dropoff after winning the national championship have lowered the volume on this week's meeting with the Wolverines at the Horseshoe. If Michigan beats Ohio State a fourth straight time and it keeps the Buckeyes out of the Big Ten championship game and playoff ... well, there'll be lots of noise in Columbus then. The Lone Star Showdown returns to the gridiron for the first time since 2011, when Texas and Texas A&M were in the Big 12. The Longhorns head to No. 20 Texas A&M on a four-game win streak. The Aggies have lost two of three after Saturday's four-overtime loss at Auburn. The winner advances to the Southeastern Conference championship game against Georgia. The Broncos are tied with Notre Dame for the second-longest active win streak, at nine games, and they seem to have adopted a survive-and-advance mantra. They trailed 23-point underdog Wyoming in the fourth quarter before winning 17-13 and clinching a spot in the Mountain West championship game. They won their previous game, 42-21 against San Jose State, but didn't pull away until the fourth quarter. Two weeks ago they beat a three-win Nevada team 28-21. Just when you think Illinois is about to cash in for the season, they do what they did against Rutgers. The Illini were down 31-30 when they lined up for a 58-yard field goal with 14 seconds left. Ethan Moczulski missed. But wait. Rutgers called timeout before the snap, and Bret Bielema thought better of trying another kick and sent his offense back on the field. Luke Altmyer passed to Pat Bryant for the winning 40-yard touchdown. The Illini won't play for the Big Ten title, but they have a chance for nine wins and a nice bowl. Ohio State played in three of the five regular-season top-five matchups and won three of them. The Buckeyes lost to Oregon and beat Penn State and Indiana. ... Kansas' 37-21 win over Colorado made the Jayhawks the first FBS team with a losing record to beat three straight Top 25 opponents. The Jayhawks, who were 2-6 a month ago, will be bowl eligible if they win at Baylor. ... Nebraska ended the longest power conference bowl drought with its 44-25 win over Wisconsin. The Cornhuskers haven't played in a bowl since 2016.
